The 2012 RITL will take place between July 12 and August 14 (with July 10 & 11 and August 15 designated as independent travel days) and utilize, as its general subject, the cultural impact of the journeys and conquests of Alexander the Great. Arguably a historical realization of the Greek Mythology he himself was spreading, thematic parallels are found within the mythologies and narratives of Europa and her brothers (including Cadmus, the founder of Thebes), the Theban plays by Sophocles, Medea, and Electra, amongst others. In addition to significant points of interest related to performance and mythology (e.g., Devil’s Throat Cave, the mythological path to Hades. and the ancient Thracian city of Perperikon), the 2012 RITL will visit Thebes, Istanbul, Athens, Pella, Vergina, Delphi, Cadmea, Kusadasi, Ephesus, Pergamon, Askelpion, Assos, Thessaloniki, and Troy.

April 14, 2012 is the deadline for the application and accompanying materials. Spaces are limited and will be filled as applications are reviewed and telephone interviews are conducted. Consideration is open to all individuals who: have strong educational and/or professional interests within the theatre, will be 18 years of age or older by the start of the 2012 program, and have a strong working knowledge of English and/or Bulgarian. Although the program is designed for those with wide-ranging interests within the theatre (Acting/Performance, Directing, Playwriting, Dramaturgy, Critical Studies, Design, Choreography, Puppetry, and Multi Media/Live Performance), it should be understood the standard curriculum for first-time participants consists primarily of demanding acting/performance training and related theatre-making and theatre anthropology explorations. On a case-by-case basis, alternative schedules and concentrations are considered (primarily for returning participants, graduate students, and early professionals). Please contact us at info@rhodopi.net with any questions or concerns regarding the application process and/or curriculum. Bulgarian applicants only should contact Dr. Alexandar Iliev of the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts at theatredreams@abv.bg or 0887102673 regarding the application process. It is recommended that students (currently enrolled in a degree program) inquire with their academic advisers, and seek credits towards their degrees, as appropriate for their fields of study and home institutions' requirements. If you are interested in obtaining direct transfer credits from Southwestern University, please email the office of Intercultural Learning at studyabroad@southwestern.edu. (For an explanation of the 2012 fees, deadlines, and accommodations, please click here.)
